As a self-proclaimed foodie and food lover, I find that the choices of food available help influence me in my decision to work in a certain location. Outram is a place no stranger to the average salaryman, thanks to the many offices located within the region.
We've asked some of our friends working within the Outram region for their favourite places to chow down. Find out more below:
1. Thai Street Cuisine (Thai Kha)
Image: Seth Liu
Up first is this Thai restaurant selling authentic street food from Bangkok. Those who work around the area recommend eating the restaurant’s “Tom Yum Seafood Fried Rice” which sounds as delicious as you’re imagining.
Other fan favorites include the “Thai Waterfall Pork Salad”, the “Thai Boat Beef Noodles” and the “Super Size Red Tom Yum Soup with Lobster”. Of course, you’ll have to leave the latter to a special occasion (your colleague’s birthday maybe).

2. Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa
Image: Michelin Guide
If you’re willing to travel for lunch, then you must try the Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa. The hawker stall received a Michelin Bib Gourmand; an award given to restaurants that serve high-quality food at an affordable price.
People rave about the stall’s “Asia Delight Laksa” which features a simmered oyster and scallop broth (...imagine the umami). Other unique qualities that set this dish apart from the rest is the crayfish in the laksa.
For those looking to indulge in a lighter lunch option, why not try the “Fruit Juice Mee Siam”. Yup, you read that correctly, chef Daniel Soo uses a secret fruit juice concoction instead of tamarind water. So, you’re ready to lepak here for lunch, guys?

3. DaeJon House 대전집

You don’t have to travel far for a taste of Korea. Located just a few minutes away from the MOM building, is DaeJon House, a restaurant known for their Korean Beef Noodles. It’s no coincidence that this is also the eatery’s signature dish.
So what’s so special about their Korean Beef Noodles? Well, imagine springy al dente noodles topped with beef slices and a huge piece of prawn. The combination is then soaked in a soup - made out of beef broth that has been cooking for 6 hours. Don’t worry, we’re salivating too!
Not a fan of beef? There’s plenty of other Korean and fusion offerings to satisfy your picky taste buds!

4. Kho Thai (Amoy Street Food Centre)
For our Muslim friends who can’t enjoy our first Thai restaurant recommendation, Kho Thai is another great option. Despite being another Thai restaurant, there’s nothing basic about the food options available here!
Spoil yourself with the stall’s “Stir Fried Prawns with Basil Leaves and Rice” or for something lighter, choose the “Sliced Fish Clear Tom Yum Soup”. If you’re on the lookout to try something out of this world, then get the “Original Mutton Clear Tom Yum Soup” to share. This is the spot to head to for cheap and delicious comfort food!

When I think of Big Bowls Project, I think of salmon at an affordable price. The store sells a variety of delightful salmon bowls. You’ll have the option to have your salmon cooked in a variety of ways; “Szechuan Black Bean”, “Tom Yum”, “Homemade Recipe”, “Truffle Oil”, and “Mentaiko”.
Each salmon bowl comes with a choice of two sides (i.e. Japanese cucumber, cherry tomatoes, avocado and edamame). You’ll also have the option of adding an onsen egg atop your salmon for an additional $0.50 or even another slice of salmon if you’re feeling ravenous.
*Fun fact: This stall is halal and Muslim owned.

6. Mount Faber Nasi Lemak
Image: Hungry Go Where
You’ve probably heard of this store as they sell one of Singapore’s most popular Nasi Lemak. Whilst standard toppings such as fried fish and otah can be found here, many have raved about the fried chicken sold by the store.
If rice is too heavy for you to handle, why not opt for the shop’s fried bee hoon? You can still choose to add their famous fried chicken wing to accompany your meal. Whatever your choice is, don’t forget to drown your meal with their spicy sambal for an extra kick! This foodie spot is located quite a distance from the MRT, perfect for those looking to melt away some of the calories from this fatty (but yummy) meal!

7. Steamov

If you’ve been working in Singapore for some time then you’re no stranger to our country’s strong OT culture. One way to make those late work days better? Hanging out with your friends and eating a bowl of cheap hot pot!
Located in Chinatown, Steamov is a hotpot restaurant. What makes this place stand out is that the ingredients come to you on a conveyor belt! Additionally, each person gets their own hotpot bowl to cook and stew their food.
You can opt for standard hotpot ingredients such as lotus root and fishball. But be sure to try their roe filled salmon ball and crayfish skewers! They’re slightly pricier but they’re worth it. If you’re still feeling stressed out after your hotpot date, why not wander around Chinatown and have a drink?

8. Kafe Utu
Image: Expat Choice
Does the pencil pushing life bore you? If so, venture out of your comfort zone and try out Kafe Utu! A cafe selling authentic cuisine from all over the African continent. Personally, since the cafe is new, we don’t know what’s good and what’s not.
However, just from a quick browse of the menu, we’re keen to try dishes such as the “West African Charred Aubergine Stew with Angus Beef Cheek” and the traditional “Smokey Cassava Leaf with Marinated Thigh Stew”. Each of these dishes will reportedly come with a plate of fatty coconut rice. Kinda like an atas Nasi Lemak!
Since it is an upscale cafe, the food here can be quite pricey. But we’ve heard that the coffee at Kafe Utu is also good. Perhaps this could be a great place to have an after-work meeting instead?

9. Kok Sen Restaurant

Kok Sen Restaurant is another local food haunt located at Outram, to receive a Michelin Bib Gourmand award. The award-winning dish that everyone who’s anyone has raved about here is the “Claypot Yong Tau Foo”. Unlike other versions of Yong Tau Foo, Kok Sen’s version allegedly comes stuffed with a combination of prawn, fish, and squid paste.
Additionally, the delicious meal will come served all drenched in hot brown gravy. We can’t think of anything more sinful! Since it’s a zi char restaurant, visitors can expect to dine in and eat notable zi char dishes such as “Har Cheong Kai Chicken” and “Cereal Butter Prawn” to name a few. Kok Sen Restaurant is definitely a place to visit for those looking to have good comfort food with a group of good pals.

10. Kampong Chicken Eating House
Image: The Traveling Hungry Boy
How could we end our list without including one of Singapore’s favourite dishes, chicken rice? If you must know, a kampung chicken is a free-range one without any hormones injected into it. As such, it is a healthier and low cholesterol option for chicken lovers!
What makes the chicken rice here different from the rest might not sound like much. The chicken is boiled in ginger, giving its supple skin a light yellow tinge. Those who buy the “Chicken Rice Set” will receive a serving of chicken along with soy sauce egg, chicken soup, and rice! It’s actually pretty cheap too (approx.S$4.70) per meal. Now that’s a bargain!
