While the question might seem simple on the surface, most job seekers are unsure of the best way to answer this question. Newer job seekers and fresh graduates might find this question tough to answer — especially when one is not prepared to answer the question.

    Why Do Employers Ask These Questions?

    There are several reasons why an employer would ask this question. Firstly, they want to see how confident you are once this question is thrown your direction. Apart from your elevator pitch, employers throw this question to candidates to assess how worthy you are of the position. 


    Some other reasons why employers ask this question include: 

    • To see the skills and experiences you bring up! This will be a good chance to emphasise some of your key strengths and skills. You may not know what the other interviewees are bringing to the table. As such, we always recommend describing skills that can be found both inside and outside of the job! For instance, if you’re applying to an IT or Tech role but you have some marketing and communication skills. You might want to bring it up during the interview!

    • To see if you’ll be a great fit for the company and the team they’re hiring for. Place priority on emphasising the company’s culture. Additionally, don’t forget to mention how you’ll be a great hire for the company! The key here would be to identify the company culture and department and tell the interviewer how you’ll fit in.

    • To discern your personality. Your personality determines your working style and whether or not you’ll get along with your co-workers. Keep in mind that organizations spend a pretty penny during the recruitment process. As such, it is crucial for them to find the right fit.     • To find out the different benefits of hiring you. In this case, it would be a good time to mention how your different skills and experience can benefit the company. If you’re too stumped to answer, why not tell them how hiring you will make their lives easier.

Of course, it’d be best to not oversell your enthusiasm during this part of the interview. A warm smile and appearing friendly and professional is all you need!

    Possible Answer #1: It is an honour to be interviewed for this position with such a renowned organization. Working here will be a great opportunity for me to establish myself and my skills in the corporate world. I may be a fresh graduate. However, I believe that the skills and experience I’ve accumulated from my past internships can contribute to the growth of your organization. 


    Why this answer works: This answer shows interest in the company. In addition, it appears to be friendly and is relevant to the question. 

    Possible Answer #2: Over the years, I have accumulated the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this position. In addition to my hard skills, I’ve worked hard to perfect my communication and teamwork skills. I believe that your company will benefit from this once I am selected for this position. I am a hard worker and I’ve given my all in past companies. Previously I’ve managed to achieve [insert achievement]. If you hire me, I will be able to channel these skills into your company. 

    Why this answer works: Not only does this answer show enthusiasm. It also highlights quantifiable achievements and the different skills you can bring to the company. Finally, it also brings awareness of the company’s future needs to the forefront. 


    Why are you the best person for this job?

    Possible Answer #1: When I read the job description in your advertisement. I noticed that your organization is looking for an employee with an intermediate level of experience. As someone with more than five years in the Tech and Cybersecurity field. I managed to prevent X number of breaches, thus increasing cyber safety in the company by X%. Not only am I a capable employee behind the scenes, I’ve spent years describing complicated cybersecurity measures and breaking them down into bite-sized pieces. I believe that my experience, coupled with my strong communication skills and strong work ethic can benefit your company immensely. 


    Why this answer works: Highlighting your greatest achievements in your previous roles is key to selling yourself. In addition, this answer shows enthusiasm for the company as well as the desire to work there. 


    Possible Answer #2: I’ve read up a little about your company and I know that you’re on the lookout for someone to overhaul your IT team. As you can tell from my resume, I have the required certifications, skills, and experience needed to help you expand further. In addition, my experience as an IT manager at (company name) makes me a suitable candidate. Would you like me to go on? 

    Why this answer works: This is an open ended answer that shows you’ve done adequate research and enthusiasm for the role.
